Chill-Out with Sleaford Mods
We asked Jason Williamson, frontman of the mighty Sleaford Mods (and inventor of the mildly terrifying Baking Daddy) to make us a playlist for the simple joy of sitting in your garden, eating an ice cream on
a summer’s day.
“I don’t want loud shit in an idyllic setting, I want romance and warmth. Not necessarily romance in its classical sense but in the energy of the songs I’m listening to. Even if the songs are about hopeless substance addiction and shame, or the excitement of getting fondled in the gay porn theatres of 1980’s London. I like soft songs quite a lot of the time but it’s in these well-written classics that you always find the hardest shit. I want that kind of beautiful language accomp-anying my Mr Whippy. I believe the album ‘Stars’ by Simply Red was recorded in Paris, which makes it even better – what a record. The pain in Alex Cameron’s voice on ‘Dead Eyes’ is almost upstaged by his Bonnie Raitt influence… Incredible. The way in which Aldous Harding describes snared love in ‘Treasure’ is peerless. Tor Marie’s Billy Nomates white-hot talent makes quick work of anything she does, but in ‘Black Curtains in The Bag’ she manages to make the sorrow of a doomed relationship as hard hitting as anything I’ve ever valued. Pass me a Flake…”
